How reimbursing later works

An HSA is triple tax-advantaged: contributions go in tax-free, investments grow tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses come out tax-free.

There’s no deadline to pay yourself back for an eligible expense, as long as it happened after you opened your HSA. So instead of withdrawing right away, many people:

  1. Pay medical bills out of pocket.
  2. Leave the money in their HSA, invested, to grow for years or decades.
  3. Reimburse themselves later, tax-free, whenever they need the funds.

This requires keeping records of every expense for years. HSA Monster keeps those records organized and ready.

Your Reimbursable total

Reimbursable on the Summary screen is the money you can still withdraw tax-free:

Out-of-pocket expenses − reimbursements you’ve taken = Reimbursable

Expenses you paid directly from your HSA don’t count, since your HSA already covered them.

Reimbursements come out of the total, not out of specific expenses, so you never have to match them up. Reports apply them to your oldest expenses first.

Keep your receipts

If the IRS asks, you’ll need a receipt for every expense you reimburse. Attach them as you go, and turn on Settings → Exclude Missing Receipts so your total only counts expenses you can back up.
