Contributions & balances

An account’s balance is built from its transactions:

Transaction Effect
Contribution Adds money
Reimbursement Takes money out
Expense paid from the HSA Takes money out
Reconciliation Adjusts to match your statement

Adding a contribution

  1. Press and hold the account on Summary, or open it and tap +.
  2. Tap Add Contribution.
  3. Enter the amount and date, then tap Save.

Log each paycheck deposit, or one total per month or year. Contributions add up in YTD Contributions on Summary.

Reconciling your balance

HSA Monster builds your balance from what you log. It doesn’t connect to your HSA provider, so anything else that changes your balance needs a reconcile to catch up.

That matters most if your HSA is invested. Market gains and losses, dividends, interest, and fees all change your balance without a transaction you’d log. Reconciling also records your investment growth, so it shows up on your chart.

To bring HSA Monster in line with your provider:

  1. Press and hold the account and tap Reconcile.
  2. Choose how to enter it:
    • Set: type the Balance from your statement. The Adjustment is calculated for you.
    • Increase By or Decrease By: enter just the change.
  3. Tap Save.

Reconcile only after you’ve logged all contributions and withdrawals up to that date. Otherwise the reconcile adjustment absorbs them, and they’ll be counted twice once you add them.

Reconciling monthly or quarterly, when your statement arrives, is usually enough.

Seeing your growth

On Summary, switch the chart to HSA Balance. The dotted line is what you’ve put in, minus what you’ve taken out. The space between it and your balance is your investment growth.
